Best Time to Visit ☀️
Rwanda can be visited year-round, but the best time for travel is during the dry seasons:
- June to September: This is the long dry season and the absolute best time for gorilla trekking, with clearer skies and less mud on the trails.
- December to February: A shorter dry season, which is also excellent for trekking and general travel.
The wet seasons (March-May and October-November) bring rain, which can make trekking more challenging. However, the scenery is incredibly lush, and it's a great time for birdwatching.
Getting There & Around
By Air: Most travelers fly into Kigali International Airport (KGL), which is well-connected to major cities in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.
Getting Around:
- Private Hire/Tour Operator: The most comfortable and efficient way to see the country is by hiring a private 4x4 vehicle with a driver-guide.
- Buses: Public buses connect all major towns and are a reliable and affordable way to travel between destinations.
- Moto-Taxis: These motorcycle taxis are ubiquitous in cities and towns for short trips. They are quick and cheap; helmets are mandatory for both driver and passenger.
- Car Rental: Self-driving is possible, as the main roads are well-paved and among the best in East Africa.
Top Destinations
- Volcanoes National Park: The crown jewel of Rwanda, this park is part of the Virunga Massif and is world-renowned for its mountain gorilla trekking. It was also the base for primatologist Dian Fossey. Besides gorillas, you can track golden monkeys or hike one of the dormant volcanoes.
- Nyungwe Forest National Park: One of the oldest rainforests in Africa, Nyungwe is a paradise for primate lovers and birdwatchers. It's home to 13 primate species, including chimpanzees and large troops of colobus monkeys. Don't miss the spectacular Canopy Walkway, which offers a stunning view from above the forest.
- Akagera National Park: A beautiful savanna park bordering Tanzania, Akagera is Rwanda's only Big Five destination. After years of restoration, it's now home to lions, rhinos, elephants, buffalo, and leopards. A boat trip on Lake Ihema is a highlight for spotting hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds.
- Lake Kivu: One of Africa's Great Lakes, its serene, deep blue waters are surrounded by terraced hills. The towns of Gisenyi (Rubavu) and Kibuye (Karongi) are perfect spots for relaxing, swimming, kayaking, and enjoying the stunning scenery.
- Kigali: One of the cleanest, safest, and most organized capital cities in Africa. A visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial is a powerful and essential experience to understand the country's history. Explore its thriving art scenes, bustling markets like Kimironko, and excellent culinary offerings.

- Gorilla Trekking: A bucket-list, life-changing experience. Permits are required and should be booked far in advance.
- Chimpanzee Tracking: Trek through the dense Nyungwe Forest to find and observe chimpanzees in their natural habitat.
- Canopy Walk: Experience the rainforest from 70 meters high on the Nyungwe Canopy Walkway.
- Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial: A deeply moving and important visit to honor the victims and learn about the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Food & Drink 🍲
Rwandan food is fresh, healthy, and largely based on local produce.
- Ugali: A stiff maize porridge, a staple food in the region.
- Isombe: A delicious dish made from mashed cassava leaves, often cooked with onions, spinach, and groundnuts.
- Brochettes: Skewers of grilled meat (usually goat) or fish, a popular and tasty meal.
- Akabenz: A local delicacy of stewed or fried pork.
- Coffee & Tea: Rwanda is famous for its high-quality coffee and tea. A visit to a coffee plantation is highly recommended.
- Urwagwa: A traditional banana beer.
Health & Safety
- Vaccinations: A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required if you are traveling from a country with a risk of yellow fever. Check with your doctor for other recommended immunizations.
- Malaria: Malaria is present, especially in lower-altitude areas. Take antimalarial medication and use insect repellent.
- Water: Drink only bottled or purified water.
- Safety: Rwanda is exceptionally safe, with low crime rates. The country is known for its orderliness and cleanliness.
- Plastic Bags: Please note that plastic bags are banned in Rwanda. Your luggage will be checked at the airport, and any plastic bags will be confiscated.
Culture & Etiquette
- Greetings: A friendly handshake is the common form of greeting. Learning a few words in Kinyarwanda, such as "Muraho" (Hello) or "Amakuru?" (How are you?), is greatly appreciated.
- Respectful Remembrance: When discussing the 1994 Genocide, do so with sensitivity and respect. It is a deeply painful part of the country's recent history.
- Umuganda: On the last Saturday of every month, from 8 am to 11 am, citizens participate in mandatory community service. Most shops are closed, and traffic is minimal. It's a key part of Rwanda's national identity.
- Photography: Always ask for permission before taking pictures of people. Photography of government or military buildings is prohibited.
