4 Days Nyiragongo & Virunga Safari
Day 1 - Arrival and Transfer to Virunga National Park
The journey begins with arrival in Kigali, Rwanda, where you will be picked up early and transferred by road to Bukima in the Democratic Republic of Congo, part of Virunga National Park. The drive takes about four hours with a stop for lunch in Goma town before reaching the park’s accommodation- Mikeno Lodge or Bukima Tented Camp. This day focuses on cross-border travel and settling into the lodge in preparation for the gorilla trekking adventure ahead.
Day 2 - Gorilla Trekking in Virunga National Park
After an early breakfast, guests attend a briefing at the park headquarters before starting the gorilla trek. The hike can last from 30 minutes to several hours depending on the location of the habituated gorilla group. Once the gorillas are located, you will spend up to an hour observing and photographing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. After trekking, return to the lodge for relaxation and dinner, reflecting on the unforgettable encounter with one of the world's most endangered animals.
Day 3 - Nyiragongo Volcano Hike
This day is dedicated to the spectacular ascent of Mount Nyiragongo, one of Africa’s most active volcanoes located within Virunga National Park. After breakfast, trekkers meet guides and porters for a briefing before beginning the hike, which typically starts around 10:00 am. The climb involves several hours of trekking with breaks along the way. Upon reaching the summit, hikers enjoy breathtaking views of the lava lake and surrounding landscape, spending the evening at the summit camp for a unique overnight experience under the stars.
Day 4 - Descent and Departure
Early in the morning, participants descend Nyiragongo volcano, returning to the base camp by mid-morning. After the descent, travelers are driven back to Kigali, often stopping for lunch and souvenir shopping en route. The safari concludes with drop-off at the airport or a hotel in Kigali, completing an intense and thrilling four-day adventure combining gorilla trekking with the dramatic experience of an active volcanic hike.
